Philip spence trained as an architect at the school of architecture, glasgow college of art and completed a BArch at Strathclyde University. He enjoyed a succesful career in architecture with admission to RIBA (Royal institute of british architects) and RIAS (ROyal incorporation of Architects in Scotland). He began a partnership practice from the late 1950s and by the 1980s was runing philip spence associates.
After retirement philip found a love of painting, initially using watercolours to depict the scottish landscape but soon introducing a wider range of media. His current work uses mixed media and acrylics, his subject matter sometimes deviating from the favoured landscape imagery.
He says of his work:
“Painting hives me the opportunity to create a personal contribution to a vision. Every work is an experiment which combines technical and artistic expression. Like an author, when I start, I’m not always sure what the conclusion will be!”
