scotland-born stuart herd grew up in england attending amersham college of art and began his career in photography. during this time he travelled frequently, ultimately becoming a cruise ship photographer, and to scotland making himself familiar with his native landscape.
His first return to scotland in the mid-90s saw his artistic career manifest in highly detailed pen and ink cityscapes and scenes, a high level of detail being a signature element of his work. For a time he earned a living as an art auctioneer and picture framer in jamaica, and gained renown for his pen and ink work on the island.
He returned to scotland once again in 2002 initially working as a picture framer but eventually turning to his painting full time and in 2007 he opend ‘the art studio’ where he could combine his picture framing business and artist’s practice.
after an accident that led to the loss sight in one eye, in 2012 stuart worked towards opening ‘the harbour gallery’ in tarbert and a second in ullapool in 2015 for local artists.
his ouvre is prolific and ranges from sports imagery to his well known cow paintings. Urban and rural landscapes, seascapes and panoramas, ruins and farm animals; stuart’s subject range is broad but his style is singular in its use of detail.
Stuart exhibits work in over 20 galleries across the uk.
